A movie project presented itself recently and I found myself in need of a Super 16mm camera. Visions of Bolex, Arri and Aaton swirled around but, realistically the price is way too prohibitive for smaller projects. Having a specific look in mind that centers around the use of Russian prime glass, the logical choice was to locate a camera specifically built for the task. Enter Max ( k3super16 on Instagram) a craftsman, fabricator, and modifier of Krasnogorsk cameras. Based in the Russian Federation and specializing in adapting the K3’s (also the older 2 model), Max offers a host of other services for updating these metal beasts. Just a short list of work offered (and I’m sure I’m missing some things):
· CLA’s
· Format modification from standard 16mm to Super 16 and Ultra 16
· Viewfinder modification
· Modified Lens mount to accept M42, Canon EF and the PL
· Monitor mounting and custom one off’s
· Accessories (Lenses, Lomo 16mm developing tanks, etc.…)
· Unmatched Warranty
I reached out to Max directly via his Instagram and was very grateful for his level of professionalism and approachability. He was quick to reply and answered all of my questions and concerns regarding the modified Super 16mm I was interested in purchasing. Once we decided on the right camera for the project, Max packaged and shipped out the kit which arrived in the States safe and sound about 7 days later. Everything was exactly as described and the camera, kit and documentation was like new. If you’re interested in 16mm and are looking to purchase a camera Max should be the first person you reach out to.
